Thrifting and upcycling have taken the home decor world by storm and I'm definitely on board. Recently I found an incredible deal on Facebook Marketplace: a HUGE antique basket tray for just £5! It measures about one meter across, making it a perfect fit for my ottoman at The Barn.
The Discovery
The adventure began with a casual scroll through Facebook Marketplace. I was searching for items that could enhance The Barn when I spotted the large antique basket tray. The moment I saw it, I felt a spark of excitement and couldn't resist reaching out to the seller.
After a bit of friendly conversation, I secured the tray and quickly arranged a pick-up. As I loaded this exquisite piece into my car, my mind was racing with all the ways I could use it.
The cleaning process
Once I got home the first task was to give the basket tray a thorough cleaning. Years of dust and dirt had settled into its woven texture, taking away its charm. I filled my bathtub with warm water and fairy liquid and carefully immersed the tray, using a soft brush to scrub away the grime that had accumulated.
After washing I let the tray dry completely. This step is crucial, as even a small amount of moisture can damage antique pieces. I placed it in a warm spot in my home to dry naturally.
Styling the Tray
With a clean and dry tray ready for use, it was time to style it at The Barn. I placed it on my gingham ottoman and it was the perfect size. The rustic texture of the basket beautifully contrasts with the cheerful gingham pattern, creating a focal point that draws the eye.
I then styled it with my favourite coffee table book, a stack of handmade ceramics and seasonal foliage in a terracotta pot.. This styling not only enhanced the visual charm of the space but also transformed the tray into a functional element.
So if you're looking for something similar explore options on platforms like Facebook Marketplace or perhaps your local antiques centre. You might just find a unique treasure waiting to become the centerpiece of your home!
So, what hidden gems will you uncover next? Happy hunting!
